Recently, whether the wages of athletes are high has become a fiercely controversial issue. Some people assert that they do not deserve to earn astronomical amounts of money, while others argue otherwise. I wholeheartedly agree with the former stand. In the following essay, both views will be discussed before a conclusion is reached with my opinion.
On the one hand, those who claim that sportspeople do not have the right to receive a huge amount of money do so for several reasons. Proponents of this argument insist that sports professionals do not offer a necessary service to society, whereas doctors and teachers contribute to the public good. In other words, although society would be perfectly functional without professional football, it would be disintegrated without health professionals. A classic example of this is that football players earn vast sums of money lay simply kicking a ball, whereas medical professionals have to invest in years of education and work long hours to save people's lives.
My opinion, however, is that they are entitled to get higher wages. The most compelling reason is that in order to become a top athlete, sportspeople must follow a grueling schedule and devote a huge amount of not only time but also energy to practicing and training. Furthermore, the sports industry generates millions of dollars, and it is therefore natural that athletes are given a higher pay. In fact, supporters and companies are willing to spend extrotionate amounts of money to watch sports stars and to advertise their products, leading to an increase in revenue. In light of above, I find these more persuasive.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that there are a variety of opinions about this topic. However, after considering this matter in a careful manner, I fully support the view that sports stars have a right to receive a huge amount of money for the reasons discussed above.
