Topic :

Some people think advertisements may have positive economic effects whereas others think there are negative social effects because individuals are not satisfied with who they are and what they have. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer :

Some people believe that advertisements can give economic benefits, however, others assert that social negative impacts should be considered for people and the society. Before deciding my opinion, I need to scrutinize both perspectives.

There are those who suppose that advertisements can be the source of fortune for people and the society. It is true that the wider public tends to decide what they purchase while watching commercials. With this consumption, local stores and companies are likely to earn a huge amount of revenue which becomes their source of business, thereby hiring more employees or increasing their workers’ salaries. Furthermore, the government would get more taxes from companies that want to widen their business extent. That is the reason why companies are more inclined to advertise their products internationally, trying to boost their revenue through various kinds of commercials.

However, others insist that advertisements have caused some serious social problems. It cannot be denied that most commercials consist of luxurious products and exotic places that the ordinary people cannot buy or visit in their real life, so many of them have already felt frustrated and depressed even just watching those ads. More importantly, some deprived people would commit crimes because of the dissatisfaction of their situation. Moreover, some childish kids try to dominate their peer group with the advertised new toys that they have finally achieved from their parents or grandparents, and this behaviour would lead to be bullying or to be bullied.

In conclusion, I think that despite some economic benefits, advertisements cause serious social issues like the masses’ psychological disorders, the increased crime rate, and the relationship with friends.
