The older generations tend to have very traditional ideas about how people should live, think and behave. However, some people believe that these ideas are not helpful in preparing younger generations for modern life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
Answer :
As technology has developed, it is evident that modern life is completely different from the past. Some suggest that traditional ideas in life should be preserved, which is often contradicted by others who argue they are not helpful for life today. In my opinion, traditional ideas might be needed in some areas but are also unnecessary in other parts.
First, when it comes to how people should live, traditional ideas are required. There is a huge similarity in people of the past and today. They share the same type of society; living in groups and interacting with others. That is why the idea of how people can benefit each other or live harmoniously should be passed on by ancestors.
Secondly, considering about how people should think, traditional ideas will not have a great impact on modern life. Compared to the past when people were starving and had to spend most of their lives finding food, nowadays people desire improved quality of life. For example, enough time for rest has become a significant factor while choosing a job and marriage is not thought to be mandatory. As values change, so do ideas.
Last but not least, traditional ideas are nothing but ‘old thoughts’ in how people should behave. In the past, people were interested in finding more fossil fuels or producing massive products. However, now it is time to develop environmental friendly fuels and protect the forests. Continuation of the past behavior would only make the earth more ill.
In conclusion, traditional ideas are essential in how to live, but are quite ‘old’ in how to think or behave.
