With an increasing population communicating via the internet and text messaging, face to face communication will become a thing of the past. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
Answer :
Some people insist that increased volume of communication through the Internet and text message can be a signal of the doom of the face to face communication. However, due to the superiority of face to face communication has based on the trust, and complementary nature between electronic communication and face to face communication, the doom shall not be coming.
Firstly, electronic communication cannot compensate the trust that is forged when people actually meet each other. By using the Internet and text communication, one can share information for make the arrangement face than ever before. However, these are the means of communication. The true goal of communication is sharing feelings and making important decisions grounded on the ties between people. In this regard, face to face communication has strong points on making trusted relationship by leveraging various clues like facial expressions, voices, gestures and instant feedbacks. For example, when companies are making important deals each other, the electronic communications are the tools to reach the agreement. The final trigger is always pulled by face to face agreement meeting that holds trust between people.
Secondly, the relationship between electronic and face to face communication is complementary. Compared to the days without the Internet and text messaging system, people actually meet each other often in these days. People were able to make more meetings and appointments by overcoming the gap between places and time due to the development of electronic communication system. For instance, without the help of advanced communication system, several days were took to arrange the face to face conference by investing huge time on mailing or visiting the guest for the invitation. Meanwhile, the group e-mailing system can do the same job within a minute.
To conclude, compared to the face to face communication, communications via the Internet and text messaging have clear limit of trustworthiness that cannot be overcome. Adding to that, the relationship between two communication types is supporting each other not competing until one is perished. Thus, the fact to face communication system shall prevail as always.
