Today, younger and older generations are in the same workplace. Does the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Answer :
The interaction between younger and older employees in the workplace is one of the most controversial issues that people like to debate. Some people argue that by working together with various age groups, companies can achieve more benefits while others assert that it has a negative effect on member of companies. I believe that it causes more drawbacks and overweighs benefits of it.
It is true that companies which are consisted of various ages can improve the work performance based on numerous perspectives of employees. This is because their opinions are significantly distinguished from others as they grow in different ways and it helps companies develop the comprehensive goals. However, this would be occurred with extremely low probability and in most cases, workers with various ages struggle to conflict with others since they have different attitudes to solve the problem. For instance, older workers tend to solve it using their experiences while younger try to settle the same problem with data and methodology in a systematic way. Therefore, they can not understand the behaviour of other age groups.
Furthermore, working with old generation causes a strict atmosphere in the workplace that is an opposite result of companies’ aim; they attempt to develop the flexible working condition. In many cases, older employees require younger staffs to obey their opinions. Besides, while older generation provide a good advice to younger workers and even it is really helpful, younger workers do not follow it since they recognize it as a discipline. As a result, the atmosphere of the company would become strict and communication between two groups might be reduced.
In conclusion, while the interaction between two age groups in the same workplace makes companies to enhance the performance as they share the various opinions based on their perspectives, I opine that the downsides of it, such as strict atmosphere or conflict, outweigh the advantages.
