' Art and music classes should not be mandatory at school ' issue

Topic :

Art and music classes should not be mandatory at school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer :

It is a common belief that teaching art and music at school is useless and it is better to learn about more practical subjects such as technology or computer science. However, I firmly believe that art and music are invaluable subjects for students in order to become creative and relieve stress of their daily lives.

To begin with, art and music foster creativity of students. By drawing and playing or composing music, a creative instinct and inspiration in students' deep mind are stimulated. There are not many chances to learn music and art than we thought there would be. In that situation, they should be taught in schools as mandatory classes. It has been shown in a study that students who are trained to play an instrument once a week in school programs have more creativity than others who only attend schools which have no curriculum of art and music.

On top of that, art and music create more opportunities to relieve stress for students. Youths can lose their stress by expressing their thoughts and emotion in paintings or playing. In fact, it has been reported that youths who take art classes in their schools have less complicated brain wave shapes and frequency, which means their brains do not suffer from much stress. They even smiled 15 times more on average per day compared to students who are only educated science and other practical subjects rather than art and music.

To sum up, studying art and music at school offer advantages of improving creativity and reducing stress for students. For these reasons, it is important to make art and music classes obligatory at schools.
